Bairéad was a type of cap worn in Ireland for centuries.
It is older than the beret and is the ancestor of the Irish Army
cawbeen.
The
Bairéad was made of felted woven wool but also of pure felt.
It came in all colours but a blue woad colour or red were most common.
The
Bairéad was usually worn, like the beret, flopped to one
side. It was also worn straight and pushed back.
