Cuarán / Shoe

The Gaelic word Bróg (plural Bróga), from which we get the modern word brogue/brogues is very old and refered to any type of footwear. One distinct type of shoes was called the Cuarán. This was a one-piece shoe which was wrapped around the foot and gathered around the toes with a leather thong. The Cuarán was also known as Lucas 4b, aka Bróg Éille. Worn over many centuries down to the twentieth. Sometimes worn with the hair still on. Regarded as the most common type of Irish shoe and worn by both sexes.
